Optimizing Oral Functions - Workshop

Time:

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Location:

Room 2

Audience:

D,H

Course Description:

Step into the transformative world of myofunctional therapy, a missing link in modern dentistry that bridges oral health, airway function, and whole-body wellness. This course sheds light on how habitual muscle patterns can shape structure, function, and long-term outcomes, and how myofunctional therapy can become a powerful, integrative solution for patients across all ages.

Many of the symptoms dental professionals encounter daily including chronic headaches, clenching, orthodontic relapse, mouth breathing, tongue thrust, TMD, and even sleep disturbances are often signs of deeper functional issues rooted in oral motor patterns and developmental compensations. Myofunctional therapy offers a non-invasive, therapeutic approach to retrain the muscles of the face and mouth, improving breathing, chewing, swallowing, posture, and more.

Participants will explore the clinical application of therapy in both preventative and rehabilitative care. From pre- and post-operative tongue tie protocols to enhancing orthodontic stability and airway health, this course provides a roadmap for integrating myofunctional concepts into daily dental practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the foundational principles of myofunctional therapy and how dysfunctional oral habits impact breathing, sleep, and craniofacial growth.

  • Identify common myofunctional red flags across the lifespan, including signs of oral dysfunction that may contribute to TMD, sleep-disordered breathing, orthodontic instability, and more.

  • Explore the role of OMT as both a standalone therapy and as a complement to surgical, orthodontic, or airway-focused interventions especially in pre- and post-operative care.

  • Learn a systematic approach to screening for orofacial myofunctional disorders within your existing patient population.
