Management of Cleft Lip and Palate Patients

Course Description:

This course introduces the basics of cleft care and the role of the dental team in supporting patients and families. The presentation will begin with a brief overview of the Spokane Cleft Team, including its history, what the team does, and how general dentists are involved in caring for cleft patients.


Attendees will then learn about speech and feeding development in children, with a focus on common challenges and when lingual or labial frenectomies may be needed.


The course will conclude with an overview of the surgical and orthodontic treatment of cleft patients, highlighting how care evolves as children grow and how dentists can work alongside specialists to support successful outcomes.


This course is designed for general dentists and dental team members who want a practical, foundational understanding of cleft care.

Speaker Information

Dr. David G. Gailey DDS FACS

Dr. Gailey was born in Chicago, IL and grew up in a small town in rural Utah. Dr. Gailey completed his undergraduate studies at Weber State University, graduating with honors, with a degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.  He then when to Columbus, OH and completed his dental schooling at THE Ohio State University, graduating top of his class.


Dr. Gailey knew he wanted to be a surgeon early on and trained at the second oldest training center in the U.S. for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati. During his training, he had the opportunity to travel to India to do cleft lip and palate surgery. Dr. Gailey determined to continue his surgical training at the University of Oklahoma, completing an additional year fellowship specializing in Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery.


Dr. Gailey is a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and is 1 of 45 surgeons in the United States with additional board certification in Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Gailey is also one of the few Oral Surgeons who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.


Dr. Gailey and his family moved to Spokane in 2013 and joined Inland Oral Surgery. He has been an active part of the cleft team. Dr. Gailey was made the Surgical director of the team 2018. He continues to provide cleft care for hundreds of children locally and travels internationally to perform free surgery for underserved areas including Ethiopia, Guatemala and Peru. Dr. Gailey is married and has 6 children, 4 boys and 2 little girls. They live on the South hill and love anything that takes them outside.

MarSue Chagnon, RN,

MarSue Chagnon, RN, serves as the Nurse Manager and Team Coordinator for the Providence Cleft Lip and Palate Team in Spokane, Washington, where she leads a multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial team and supports families throughout every stage of treatment. Originally from Oklahoma and part of a military family, her experience has taken her across the country and shaped a flexible, family centered approach to care. MarSue is passionate about care coordination, patient advocacy, and improving access to services for children with complex needs.

Jessie Johnson
Jessie Johnson

Jessie Johnson is a speech-language pathologist with experience serving individuals across the lifespan in acute care, long-term care, and outpatient settings. She is dedicated to supporting patients in reaching their full potential and achieving goals related to communication and swallowing. Currently, she practices in acute care with adult patients and is a member of Providence’s Cleft Lip And Palate team, where she provides evaluation and treatment of speech and feeding development in children with craniofacial differences.
